With crampons on foot and ice axe in hand, get intimate with the ancient ice formations of Europe’s largest glacier!
Wed 27.May'20 10:40
After exploring Iceland’s glaciers for over a decade with visitors from around the world we quickly found that it´s just not the same to look at an ice fall cascading down from a 2000m high caldera from a distance. You need to be in it to fully appreciate the force and size. We created the Explorer trip to give our guests this experience.
Our world-renowned “Glacier Explorer” in-depth glacier adventure takes you to Falljökull, one of the most impressive outlet glaciers of the Vatnajökull ice cap. We will take an inspiring walk along a winding path through the dramatically changing landscape carved out by the glacier. Arriving at the tongue of the glacier, we will gear up on crampons. With your guide leading the way, you will soon be exploring an impressive terrain, walking through a wonderland of ice formations and brilliant blue colors.
You will enjoy vast, sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the amazing crevasse system. Depending on the glacier conditions we will enter the rugged and chaotic icefall where it tumbles over the side of the underlying mountain and down towards the ocean. Imagine that, standing in an actual icefall, up close and personal with the ancient ice.
This trip will provide you with plenty of photo opportunities and the chance to gain a deep understanding of this magnificent glacier, how it is formed and how it continues to change shape every day.

What do I need to bring?
– Waterproof jacket and pants (We do have rental clothing available)
– Hiking boots (Available for rent, 1000 isk. We advise against runners or any type of shoe that comes up below the ankle bone as the straps on the crampons can get a bit painful during the walk)(Climbing boots are included on the ice climbing tour)
-Light sweater, wool or fleece
– Light synthetic or quick dry pants (Try and stay clear of jeans on the longer trips as they get wet & cold quick and dry slow)
– Thin Gloves
– Small Backpack (Can be handy to carry camera, rain gear and all extras)
– Sunglasses and sun protection (It can get quite bright on the ice with the reflection)
– Food and drinks (Lunch is not provided on any of our trips. June – September there is plenty of fresh water on the glacier so bring a bottle)

Glacier wonders experience was a really nice tour. We did think it was a bit expensive. It would’ve been enhanced has the weather been nicer. We did get to walk up on the glacier and see many interesting facets & features of the glacier but we were limited in how much we could see given the duration of the tour.
The 3rd of April, my boyfriend and me took the “Into the Glacier” tour with Artic Adventures.
The best part of our trip to Iceland!
Unfourtunately I don’t remember the name of our guide, he is spanish. We really enjoyed our journey. From the truck trip, to the moment of tasting the purest and cleanest water, direct from the glacier to our mouths. Walking on a glacier, under the sun was incredible. Bus stepping inside and ice cave… that was a must!
Thanks again, we’ll be back!!
ifthenAmazing Glacier Tour
We took the Glacier Explorer tour and had an amazing time! The glacier had been unexplored for several days and our tour team had spent the entire day before preparing the tour and ensuring that we would travel safely. Dan was our tour guide and he was just as excited as the rest of the tour group to travel up the glacier and explore new routes while explaining to us in detail the history of the glacier and the geology of Iceland. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone coming to Iceland that wants to see nature up close!
