Ice Cave Tour
Tue 20.Nov'18 09:30
The tour can take between 2,5 – 4 hours. The tour, guided by a local guide from Hali, will take you through the region’s history from settlement until today.
Each autumn, we go for an ice cave hunt to use for adventures during the coming winter. Ice caves are formed by Mother Nature and therefore weather dependent. Some caves have to have temperature below zero, or no rainy days before our visit.
In this tour we visit one ice cave and we always choose the best cave available according to safety and weather condition. This will affect both driving and walking time of the tour.
Driving to the location can take 25-45 minutes and the walk to the ice cave can take from 5 to 60 minutes.
You should have in mind that the walking is always in the pure Icelandic nature on gravel and rough terrain.
- Duration: 2,5 – 3,5 hours
Please note! We will not be the only group visiting the ice cave. This has become incredibly popular winter activity in Iceland. Other tour companies bring guests to visit the cave which can cause it to be crowded. Please expect to share the cave with additional groups.

GlacierAdventures base is located at at small farm called Hali. Hali is 13 km east of the famous Jökulsárlon (Glacier Lagoon) and 67 km west of the small fishing town Höfn. Hali is approximately 400 km east of Reykjavík. It should be easy to find Hali, it is only 150 m from Road 1 and the house we meet our travelers is a restaurant and a museum that looks like a book shelf.
Glacier Adventure is owned and run by two local families from Hali, 12 km east of Glacier Lagoon. Our goal is to share our love and knowledge of the region with our clients and to safely introduce them to some of Iceland´s most stunning sights.
What does local mean? We were born and raised and still live and work in the area. The mighty outlet glacier Breiðamerkurjökull is in our backyard.
We provide a local guide service in the Vatnajökull National Park area, located in Hali.
Our office staff, guides, and drivers are all personable, professional and fun to be around.
Experienced guides – Our guides are informative, friendly and professionals, they have the training to get you there safe, introduce you to the unique nature we have to offer, share their knowledge of the area with you and get you back to Hali safe and sound and of course extremely happy.

Nick PFantastic Ice Cave tour - Glacier Adventure are incredible
My girlfriend, her parents and I did this tour yesterday and it was amazing! We were unlucky enough to get a flat tire 10 minutes before arriving at the meeting spot but when calling the lovely people at Glacier Adventures they were kind enough to give us a ride to the start of the tour while our tire was replaced (we weren’t given a spare by our rental company). The experience was fantastic – it was a bonus to us that we got to walk on the glacier with crampons and then climb down into the ice cave. What a terrific experience! 3 guides for a 9 person group meant we were all kept safe and well-looked after, and we received interesting information along the way. We thoroughly loved our experience and can’t recommend Glacier Adventure highly enough!!
SunnyCitrusAmazing, Beautiful, A Must-Do
This tour blew me away. Everything was well organized and the sites were beautiful. Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. I stayed the night before the tour in Hali and enjoyed the food at the hotel there. The guides were locals, so were able to answer all of my questions about the area and the culture, as well as the history of the glacier and how the caves are formed. I felt very safe the whole time, as the guides did a good job of explaining how to safely walk across the glacier, even in high winds. I was surprised at how much energy I used during the day and was very glad I packed a substantial lunch. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is in decent shape and wants to see some beautiful sites that are a little off the beaten path. I was hesitant to spend so much on a tour at first, but it was well-worth every dime. I will never forget the experience and am so glad I booked it!
Louise RCrystal Ice Cave
An incredible adventure that began with a monster truck and a lovely guide. When we arrived at the ice cave, it all started with ice cleats. I was perplexed when we went into the cave and I saw the light blue ceiling. It was like when I saw the Northern Lights for the first time. I set up the tripod and started shooting. An incredibly beautiful experience.
MelikeygoodfoodGlacier walk and Ice cave tour!
We went on an glacier walk/ice cave tour with Glacier Adventure and loved it. We are a family of 4 with 2 daughters (13 & 15) and we had another adult friend with us. It was amazing. The guides were friendly and informative. The ride to the glacier was interesting and the glacier walk was an experience. The guides give you crampons to put on your shoes before you get on the glacier. They are definitely needed! You have to walk like a monster to get your spikes to grab the ice. Going up wasn’t bad, going down was another story. I lost my footing and started running down the glacier uncontrollably. One of the guides caught me. The ice cave tour was amazing. We were the only people there so we got awesome pictures and had ample time to walk around. The guides also took pictures for us. I would do this tour again in a heartbeat.
