Why eat locally?

For freshness and better taste

Local food is fresher and tastes better than food that has been trucked or flown in from thousands of miles away. Along with tasting better, fresher food lasts longer too.

Eating in season

Eating locally means eating seasonally with all the deprivation and resulting pleasure that follows. Local grown food has lesser environmental impact and preserves green space and farmland.

Getting to know the community

Knowing where your food is from connects you to the people who raise and grow it and their way of life. The Vatnajökull region offers a variety of fresh produce whether seafood from the charming fishing town of Höfn or organic meat and vegetable from the farms in the area, and the staff at one of the area´s many restaurants will be more than happy to inform you about the products available. For some people the benefit of this is social and psychological; for all of us, though, it pays off in the foods we eat.
